In March 1857, Inkpaduat and his band of Native Americans attacked several frontier Iowa and Minnesota settles leaving some forty dead and taking four young women captive. Les Aventures de Tintin: Tintin et le Lac aux Requins (French Edition of Tintin and the Lake of the Sharks)
Published in Hardcover by French & European Pubns (1985)
Author: Herge
Average review score:

One of the most compelling in the series
This installment in the series was superb. Political intrigue combined with a strong sense of uncertainty and action make it a very enjoyable read for adults and children. Herge leaves behind much of the miraculous coincidence that populates some of his other books and instead drafts a believable and complex (for Tintin) story that holds reader interest,

I liked Rosie's imagination.
I liked this book because Rosie doesn't get frustrated. Also, Rosie has a good imagination. She, in her mind sends a letter to her summer vacation spot, the lake. Thus the title, Letter to the Lake.

The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov: Choreographer of the Nutcracker and Swan Lake
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (March, 1997)
Author: Roland John Wiley
Average review score:

Outstanding scholarship reveals life of unknown balletmaster
Lev Ivanov has been, for the last century, a known name but an unknown figure. As fruit of exceptional research into Russian archives, Professor Wiley has produced what he claims is a `first study'--which undoubtedly it is, but which future generations of dance lovers and scholars will recognize as a major work of historical and interpretative research. Ivanov must ever remain a shadowy figure. Contemporary comment and contemporary records reveal as little as one might expect about a man was only `second balletmaster'. His legacy to us, of course, is enshrined in two of the most popular ballet in the world--`Swan Lake' and `The Nutcracker'. Yet it is Professor Wiley who has now made clear the extent of Ivanov's contribution to the development and the greatness of the Russian imperial ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre. The book is essential reading for anyone concerned with ballet, and it is a work of both scholarship and artistic insights. --Clement Crisp, Ballet Critic, The Financial Times of London

Life in the Chesapeake Bay
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 1984)
Authors: Alice Jane Lippson and Robert L. Lippson
Average review score:

The awesome beauty of small things.
Expanded revision of the 1984 Guide. I live in New Jersey & this wonderful book is one of the best teachers for my home waters.

"Life in Chesapeake Bay" is organized to take the reader from an overview of bay ecology, across the sand beaches, around the piers & pilings, into the intertidal zone, through shallow waters, marshes & then out toward deeper waters. Illustrations are clear line drawings. The scholarship never leaves the reader gasping for air. There's a highly informative glossary & species list.

"Life in Chesapeake Bay" makes a strong pro-environmental statement by showing us the diversity, poetry & interconnectedness of life (including humans) at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the fragility of this great inter-weaving of water, tide, sand & mud. It teaches us the awesome beauty of small things that exist right in front of out eyes.
